Neil Kinnock
Lord Neil Kinnock is one of the most significant figures in modern British political life. Born in Tredegar, South Wales, in 1942, the son of a coal miner and a district nurse, he served as Member of Parliament from 1970 to 1995. He was Leader of the Labour Party and Leader of the Opposition from 1983 to 1992, before serving as a European Commissioner and Vice-President of the European Commission from 1999 to 2004. He entered the House of Lords as Baron Kinnock of Bedwellty in 2005. A lifelong defender of the welfare state and public services, Lord Kinnock has spent his career arguing for the moral and practical case for collective provision and social solidarity.
